The best industries for flexing your military experience

Moving from the military to the civvy workforce can feel like a bit of a minefield. There’s a hell of a lot of options, and it isn’t always obvious how your military skills align to which type of roles.

In this article, we’re going to out three industries that match perfectly with your proven skill set. Remember though, there’s a ton of options out there that you’re capable of success in.

Defence

It’s an obvious one, but going into the defence industry can make for a smooth transition into your new career. This industry encompasses roles in land, sea and air, as well as cyber security and intelligence. It’s hugely broad.

Logistics, operations and security protocol experience are mega valuable to defence contractors, manufacturers and technology companies.

Plus, there’s often a need for security clearance so you’re one step ahead of other candidates there. These kinds of roles means you can stay on the forefront of cutting-edge technologies and advancement.

Space

Next up, the space industry. Another industry often requiring security clearance, it’s an ideal fit for ex-mil.

You could go into either commercial or non-commercial roles. Commercial roles are for-profit, and could involve projects on launching and operating satellites and spacecraft, or take a more data-focused approach to work with telecommunication organisations.

Non-commercial space roles are often within universities and research institutes, and can include administrative roles that enable the funding and organisation of government funded projects.

Both can encompass manufacturing, operations, data and ancillary services. It’s an industry that’s ever changing, super exciting and also keeps you on the nose of new technologies and scientific advancements.

Eco Tech

Eco tech is having a real moment right now, and in fact, the UK is home to some of the most innovative companies in the world. If you want to make a positive impact on the world, then seriously consider a job in eco tech.

It’s all about creating environmentally friendly technologies and solutions for a whole host of industries. So again, the roles available can be extremely broad.

You could get involved in renewable energy projects, sustainable transportation, waste management or conservation efforts. The list goes on.
You can apply your discipline, leadership and problem-solving skills to combating climate change and help pave the way for a more sustainable future. With the push to net zero, it’s an exciting sector to be a part of.

These are just a flavour of the types of exciting industries that are recruiting ex-military talent. If you want to find out more about any of these, give us a shout. We’ll be happy to talk to you about the roles we have on the platform at the moment.
